How CiteVantage started, and why I left a senior SEO role to bet on AI search

Left university with no plan anyone would have signed off on
I left university at the end of 2023 and taught myself digital marketing, the first thing I had ever been genuinely curious about. In a lower middle class family in Pakistan, leaving university is not a brave story you tell later. It is something you explain to everyone at the time, and I did not have a fallback, only a laptop and a feeling that search was something I could get good at with enough hours.

Two jobs, freelance nights, then a team to lead
So I put in the hours: two jobs, freelance work at night and a project of my own that taught me more by failing than any course would have. Over three years I went from taking any SEO work I could get to leading a team as Senior SEO Team Lead at Sparking Asia, a Top Rated Plus agency on Upwork.

Handed the senior role back to bet on AI search
I left because buyers had stopped scrolling ten blue links and started asking ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity who to hire, and those engines answer with two or three names, so ranking eleventh now means you are not there at all.
It is the role you spend three years climbing towards, and I handed it back for something most people still called a gimmick. My family did not love the idea, and I was not certain either, so I tested it on the only site I could afford to break, my own, then on clients willing to try, and the results kept coming until I stopped calling it an experiment.
